Israel left Egypt at Passover, symbolizing liberation from slavery, bondage, and death—this is the concept of deliverance. At Shavuot, Israel received the Torah, acquiring divine knowledge and life—this is the concept of redemption. Deliverance is “being pulled out of darkness”; redemption is “being restored to one’s original identity and purpose.”
This structure appears fractally in sacred time: seven sabbatical cycles (49 years) correspond to the 49 days of counting the Omer from Passover; the 50th day is Shavuot, and the 50th year is the Jubilee. In the Jubilee, slaves go free, land returns to its original owner, people return to their ancestral identity, and the world returns to its primordial order—this is the manifestation of redemption.
The gematria of “deliverance” and “redemption” reveals their essence:
- “Deliverance” — יְשׁוּעָה = 391
- “Redemption” — גְּאֻלָּה = 39
Their sum is 430, which is the value of נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh, soul).
Thus, the essence of deliverance and redemption is the story of the soul.
Deliverance and Redemption
The essence of creation is “separation” (הַבְדָּלָה).
At the beginning of creation, the human soul was originally an extension of the light of YHWH, a spark flowing from the Infinite Light (אוֹר אֵין־סוֹף), placed within the body.
In Eden stood two trees: the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. The Tree of Life symbolizes the light of YHWH Himself; therefore, “the light of YHWH” (אוֹר יְהוָה) and “the Tree of Life” (עֵץ הַחַיִּים) share the same gematria, 233—symbolizing unity, purity, and the direct flow of life.
By contrast, the Tree of Knowledge symbolizes the separation of light. The word “separation” (הַבְדָּלָה), when expanded by its letters (הא בית דלת למד הא), has a gematria of 932, precisely matching the value of “the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” (עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע).
Thus:
The Tree of Life represents unity of light;
The Tree of Knowledge represents the division of light.
The drama of creation unfolds between these two poles.
Adam, at his creation, possessed a “luminous body,” whose purpose was:
To eat of the Tree of Life, elevating both soul and body to a more refined, transparent, spiritual state, thereby reconnecting and uniting with the Creator.
This process is called “redemption” — גְּאֻלָּה, whose value 39 equals “YHWH is One” — יְהוָה אֶחָד.
This reveals:
The essence of redemption is “returning to one’s true state,”
the state of union with God.
This is the mystery of the Jubilee (יוֹבֵל).
According to the primordial plan, this redemptive process required only one day, and only one human being—
Had Adam eaten from the Tree of Life on the day of his creation, creation would have completed its “return” in a single day.
However, Adam was enticed by the serpent and chose the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge.
As a result, he not only lost his luminous state but fell to a lower condition, entering decay and death.
From that moment, humanity’s primary problem was no longer “to be redeemed,” but “to be delivered”—to be rescued from the curse of death.
What was originally a “one‑day” process was stretched into six thousand years; what required only “one person” expanded into the participation of “all humanity.”

Deliverance is the first step: repairing the sin of the Tree of Knowledge, restoring relationship with the Creator, and entering covenant.

Redemption (גְּאֻלָּה)—returning to humanity’s primordial state, eating of the Tree of Life, elevating beyond Adam’s original level, entering union with the Creator and the World to Come.

According to Talmud and Zohar, when the serpent tempted Eve, it injected into humanity a spiritual contamination called Zuhama (זוּהֲמָא).

Zuhama is a spiritual entity, not physical impurity. It obscures divine light, distorts consciousness, and plunges the soul from unity into the darkness of separation.
Zuhama = spiritual contamination entering the body.
Zuhama belongs to the spiritual realm, but because of sin it entered the body and affects the entire created order.
Midrash, Bereshit Rabbah 17:6:
כְּשֶׁהַגּוּף נִרְקָב זוּהֲמָתוֹ פּוֹרַחַת
“When the body decays, its Zuhama flies away.”
Thus, Zuhama can be removed only when the body returns to dust—this is why death is necessary.
Tuma (טֻמְאָה) is the physical‑world manifestation of Zuhama.
Relationship:
- Zuhama = root (spiritual contamination)
- Tuma = fruit (ritual impurity)
Tuma can be temporarily removed through:
- immersion in a mikveh of at least 40 se’ah (330–575 liters)

But Zuhama cannot be removed by ritual; only death and decay eliminate it.

The light that Israel lost on Tammuz 17 was transferred, 3088 years later on the same date, to the United States, making America the “light of the nations.”
