The Mystery of the 600,000 Root Souls
The book of Numbers records two censuses taken in the wilderness:
- Numbers 1:46 — the first census: 603,550
- Numbers 26:51 — the second census, thirty‑nine years later: 601,730
The difference between the two censuses is 1,820.
According to the teachings of the Arizal in Shaʿar HaGilgulim (שַׁעַר הַגִּלְגּוּלִים),
the number of Israel’s root souls (שֹׁרֶשׁ הַנְּשָׁמוֹת) is eternally fixed at 600,000.
This number never increases and never decreases.
However, these 600,000 root souls undergo continual division (הִתְחַלְּקוּת),
and from these divisions emerge countless sparks (נִיצוֹצוֹת).
Thus, when the number of individual souls appearing in history exceeds 600,000,
this does not mean that new root souls have been created.
Rather, it means that the original 600,000 roots have split,
releasing additional soul‑sparks into the world.
At the Exodus, the 600,000 Israelites corresponded to the 600,000 root souls,
but in addition to these, 3,550 extra sparks overflowed.
During the forty years in the wilderness — a period of testing and rectification —
most of these sparks were absorbed, elevated, and re‑integrated into their root souls.
Thus, by the second census, only 1,730 sparks remained unrectified.
This means:
- 1,820 sparks were rectified during the wilderness journey.
- The decrease from 603,550 → 601,730
reflects not natural population loss,
but the completion of tikkun for 1,820 sparks returning to their roots.
The Mystery of the 1,820 Sparks
First, the divine Name YHWH (יְהוָה) appears 1,820 times in the entire Torah.
Second, the gematria of יְהוָה is 26, and:
1,820 = 26 × 70
The number 70 in Scripture and Kabbalah always symbolizes the nations (הַגּוֹיִם).
Therefore, the number 1,820 signifies:
- sparks belonging to the nations,
- which were rectified during the forty years in the wilderness,
- and then reintegrated into Israel’s root‑soul structure,
- becoming the root‑souls of the righteous among the nations in every generation.
This is precisely the mystery Paul alludes to in 1 Corinthians 10:1–2:
“Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea”
Paul is speaking to Corinthians — Gentiles,
yet he calls the Israelites of the Exodus “our fathers.”
Why?
Because:
- The root‑sparks of Gentile believers
- originate from those 1,820 sparks
- rectified in the wilderness and reintegrated into Israel.
Thus Paul is not speaking metaphorically.
He is revealing a deep soul‑structure:
The souls of the nations who come to God
are rooted in the Israel of the Exodus.
Even more astonishing:
The Hebrew phrase “the root‑souls of the tree of the nations”
— שֹׁרֶשׁ נִשְׁמוֹת עֵץ הַגּוֹיִם —
has a gematria of 1,820.
The Mystery of the 1,730 Sparks
If 1,820 represents the rectified sparks,
what then is the meaning of the remaining 1,730?
The answer:
1,730 corresponds to the עֵרֶב רַב (Erev Rav — the Mixed Multitude).
When Israel left Egypt, the Torah explicitly states:
וְגַם־עֵרֶב רַב עָלָה אִתָּם
“And a mixed multitude went up with them.” (Exodus 12:38)
The Erev Rav represents the klipah (קְלִיפָּה) — the outer shells —
attached to the 600,000 root souls.
At the first census, the extra 3,550 individuals symbolized the Egyptian klipah.
During the forty years, the rectifiable sparks within this klipah were elevated —
these are the 1,820.
The remaining 1,730 represent the unrectifiable residue of the klipah —
the husks that must ultimately be discarded,
like chaff separated from grain.
The concept of the Erev Rav originates in the Zohar.
Zohar III 124b states:
חֲמֵשׁ מִינֵי עֵרֶב רַב
“There are five types of Erev Rav.”
These are:
- נְפִילִים — “Fallen Ones”
- גִּבּוֹרִים — “Mighty Ones”
- עֲנָקִים — “Giants”
- רְפָאִים — “Shades / Weak Ones”
- עֲמָלֵקִים — “Amalekites”
These five categories form the body of the klipah (גּוּף הַקְּלִיפָּה).
The klipah originates from the Primordial Serpent (הַנָּחָשׁ הַקַּדְמוֹנִי),
the force that enticed humanity to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil
— עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע.
Astonishingly:
- The phrase חֲמֵשׁ מִינֵי עֵרֶב רַב (there are five types of Erev Rav) has a gematria of 932.
- The phrase עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע (tree of knowledge of good and evil) also has a gematria of 932.
Thus:
The five types of Erev Rav = the klipah of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
The combined gematria of the five categories
(נְפִילִים + גִּבּוֹרִים + עֲנָקִים + רְפָאִים + עֲמָלֵקִים)
is 1,372.
Adding the gematria of נָחָשׁ (“serpent”) = 358
yields:
1,372 + 358 = 1,730
This reveals:
1,730 = the unrectifiable residue of the klipah.
Even more striking:
The phrase שָׁלֹשׁ קְלִיפּוֹת עֵרֶב רַב
(“the three unrectifiable klipot of the Erev Rav”)
also equals 1,730.
Thus:
- 1,820 = rectifiable sparks
- 1,730 = unrectifiable klipot
This alignment is perfect both spiritually and numerically.
The 288 Cosmic Sparks
In the system of the Arizal, creation began with the emanation of 288 cosmic sparks
— רפ״ח נִיצוֹצוֹת (RePaḥ nitzotzot).
These sparks manifest in two fundamental dimensions:
- חֶסֶד (Chesed — Lovingkindness)
- גְּבוּרָה (Gevurah — Might / Judgment)
These two forces form the twin pillars of all created existence,
balancing and sustaining one another.
Their combined gematria equals 288,
symbolizing the primordial dual‑energy structure of the universe.
This structure appears in the lower world through the historical pair:
- אַבְרָם (Abram)
- לוֹט (Lot)
The combined gematria of their names is also 288,
revealing the earthly projection of the upper‑world sparks.
These 288 sparks entered 70 vessels (כֵּלִים),
corresponding to the 70 supernal roots (שִׁבְעִים שָׁרָשִׁים),
which in turn became the archetypal roots of the 70 nations of the world.
This is why Jacob’s household entering Egypt numbered 70 persons —
they corresponded to the 70 vessels that receive the primordial sparks.
From these 70 roots, the 600,000 root souls of Israel (שֹׁרֶשׁ הַנְּשָׁמוֹת) emanated.
The root souls are light (אוֹר),
and light can only descend into the world through vessels (כֵּלִים)
that limit, shape, and reveal it.
Thus the relationship between Israel and the nations is:
- Israel = the light
- The nations = the vessels
This is the meaning of Deuteronomy 32:8:
“When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,
when He separated the sons of Adam,
He set the boundaries of the peoples
according to the number of the children of Israel.”
In other words:
- The 70‑nation structure exists
- to receive and reveal the 600,000 root souls of Israel.
In summary:
- 288 sparks →
- 70 vessels →
- 600,000 root souls of Israel
This is one of the deepest cosmological mysteries in the Arizal’s system.
The Mystery of the Whole House of Israel
From the 288 cosmic sparks (רפ״ח נִיצוֹצוֹת)
emerge the two great archetypal pillars of humanity:
- אַבְרָם (Abram) — “Exalted Father,”
representing all who are elevated and called. - לוֹט (Lot) — “Veiled / Enshrouded,”
representing those caught in confusion and concealment.
Their combined gematria is 288,
revealing the historical manifestation of the primordial duality.
The 600,000 root souls of Israel correspond to the 70 vessels (כֵּלִים).
The names of the three patriarchs and four matriarchs —
אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק יַעֲקֹב שָׂרָה רִבְקָה לֵאָה רָחֵל
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, Rachel have a combined gematria of 1,724.
The names of the twelve sons of Jacob —
רְאוּבֵן שִׁמְעוֹן לֵוִי יְהוּדָה יִשָׂשכָר זְבֻלוּן
דָן נַפְתָּלִי גָד אָשֵׁר יֹוסֵף בִּנְיָמִין
have a combined gematria of 3,176.
Together:
1,724 + 3,176 = 4,900 = 70 × 70
This represents the complete structure of the 70 vessels.
From these 70 vessels flow the 600,000 root souls of Israel.
The soul‑sparks of the nations who come to God
are branches that flow outward from these same 600,000 roots.
Even if the number of believers today reaches hundreds of millions,
they remain branches of the same root‑tree.
This is encoded in the Hebrew word for “Christian”:
נוֹצְרִי (Notzri)
whose root means “branch / shoot.”
Thus, they are the branches growing from Israel’s root‑tree.
This is why Numbers 10:36 says:
וּבְנֻחֹה יֹאמַר: שׁוּבָה יְהוָה רִבְבוֹת אַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
“And when it rested, he said:
Return, O YHWH, to the myriads of thousands of Israel.”
The phrase:
רִבְבוֹת אַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
(“the myriads of thousands of Israel”)
has a gematria of 1,272.
And 1,272 equals the gematria of:
שִׁבְעִים שָׁרָשִׁים
(“the seventy roots”).
This reveals a central truth of the Arizal’s system:
The 600,000 root souls of Israel
unfold into “myriads of thousands,”
yet their root remains the 70 supernal roots.
The Transformation of the Bright Klipah
When Israel left Egypt, the Torah states:
וְגַם־עֵרֶב רַב עָלָה אִתָּם
“And a mixed multitude went up with them.” (Exodus 12:38)
Thus, the extra 3,550 individuals in the first census
correspond to the Erev Rav who attached themselves to Israel.
3,550 = 355 × 10,
and 355 is the gematria of פַּרְעֹה (Pharaoh) —
the archetype of the dark forces of Egypt.
Therefore, 3,550 represents the four klipot (קְלִיפּוֹת)
attached to the 600,000 root souls.
According to Kabbalah:
- Three klipot are completely unrectifiable
- The fourth klipah — קְלִיפָּה נוֹגַהּ (Klipat Nogah) —
is rectifiable, a “bright shell,”
a semi‑transparent realm containing both good and evil.
This is the meaning of Leviticus 19:23–25:
- First three years: fruit may not be eaten → the three unrectifiable klipot
- Fourth year: fruit is holy → the bright klipah
- Fifth year: fruit may be eaten → the inner fruit after the shell is removed
The gematria of קְלִיפָּה נוֹגַהּ is 289, and:
- “good within evil” — טוֹב בְּרָע = 289
- “evil within good” — רַע בְּטוֹב = 289
And:
289 = 17²,
and 17 is the gematria of טוֹב (good).
Thus Klipat Nogah is the realm where good and evil are intertwined.
During the forty years in the wilderness,
this bright klipah was fully rectified,
producing the 1,820 sparks that were elevated and reintegrated into Israel.
These sparks later became the root‑souls of believers among the nations.
The number 1,820 also carries deep symbolic meaning:
- It is 10 × 182,
- and 182 is the gematria of יַעֲקֹב (Jacob).
Since the believers among the nations arise from the ten lost tribes,
we have:
1,820 = Jacob × 10 tribes
Thus 1,820 symbolizes the awakening of Israel’s light within the nations.
The Mixed Multitude (עֵרֶב רַב) and the Structure of Knowledge
The gematria of עֵרֶב רַב (Erev Rav) is 474,
which is also the gematria of דַּעַת (Daʿat — Knowledge).
Thus the Erev Rav represents the consciousness of the Tree of Knowledge,
the mixture of good and evil that entered the world through the primordial sin.
When the inner good within this mixture is clarified and separated,
that good becomes part of the seed of Jacob —
its gematria is 182, the value of יַעֲקֹב (Jacob).
The remainder — the part that cannot bear fruit —
constitutes the unrectifiable klipot (קְלִיפּוֹת) that must be removed.
The word פּוֹרִיָּה (fruitfulness) has a gematria of 301.
Subtracting this from the Erev Rav’s 474 yields:
474 − 301 = 173
When this 173 is expanded through the ten tribes,
it becomes 1,730,
the number representing the unrectifiable shells.
Thus:
- 1,820 = the rectifiable sparks extracted from the Erev Rav
- 1,730 = the unrectifiable residue of the Erev Rav
This duality is the essence of the wilderness rectification.
The Threefold Structure of the Hebrew Bible
In rabbinic tradition, the Hebrew Scriptures are divided into three parts:
- תּוֹרָה (Torah)
- נְבִיאִים (Prophets)
- כְּתֻבִים (Writings)
The combined gematria of these three words is 1,196,
which corresponds exactly to the three central sefirot of the middle pillar:
- כֶּתֶר (Keter — Crown)
- יְסוֹד (Yesod — Foundation)
- מַלְכוּת (Malkhut — Kingdom)
Thus:
- Torah = Keter
(the source of all revelation, the highest emanation of divine light) - Prophets = Yesod
(the channel that gathers and transmits the Torah’s light into the world) - Writings = Malkhut
(the manifestation of revelation in history, poetry, wisdom, and worship)
The number 1,196 decomposes into:
26 × 46
- 26 = gematria of יְהוָה (YHWH)
- 46 = gematria of לֵוִי (Levi)
This reveals that the structure of the Hebrew Bible is fundamentally:
“YHWH × Levi” — the divine Name revealed through the priestly channel.
The Fourfold Structure of the New Testament
The New Testament can be divided into four parts:
- בְּשׂוֹרָה (Gospels)
- מִפְעֲלוֹת (Acts)
- אִגְּרוֹת (Epistles)
- חֲזוֹן (Revelation)
The combined gematria of these four words is 1,820,
corresponding to the five lower sefirot:
- תִּפְאֶרֶת (Tiferet — Beauty)
- נֵצַח (Netzaḥ — Victory)
- הוֹד (Hod — Praise / Acknowledgment)
- יְסוֹד (Yesod — Foundation)
- מַלְכוּת (Malkhut — Kingdom)
Thus:
- Gospels = Tiferet
(the revelation of the Messiah’s beauty and harmony) - Acts = Yesod
(the channel through which the Gospel enters history) - Epistles = Netzaḥ–Hod
(Pauline letters on the right pillar; general epistles on the left) - Revelation = Malkhut
(the final manifestation of all divine action in the world)
And again:
1,820 = 26 × 70
- 26 = יְהוָה
- 70 = the seventy nations
Thus:
The New Testament is the revelation of YHWH extended to the seventy nations.
The Overlap of the Two Testaments: Yesod and Malkhut
The Hebrew Bible and the New Testament overlap in two sefirot:
- יְסוֹד (Yesod — Foundation)
- מַלְכוּת (Malkhut — Kingdom)
These correspond to:
- נְבִיאִים (Prophets)
- כְּתֻבִים (Writings)
- מִפְעֲלוֹת (Acts)
- חֲזוֹן (Revelation)
The combined gematria of these four words is 1,282,
which equals the gematria of the second expansion
of the name יֵשׁוּעַ (Yeshua).
The name יֵשׁוּעַ expands:
- First expansion: 12 letters (יוד שין ויו עין)
- Second expansion: 36 letters (יוד ויו דלת + שין יוד נון + ויו יוד ויו + עין יוד נון)
- Total gematria of the 36‑letter expansion: 1,282
Thus:
The overlap of the two Testaments corresponds to the expanded Name of Yeshua.
The Firstfruit Mystery
The first word of the Torah, בְּרֵאשִׁית (Bereshit – In the beginning),
contains the mystery of Israel’s soul.
בְּרֵאשִׁית also means “firstfruit” (רֵאשִׁית),
and Israel is called God’s firstfruit (Jeremiah 2:3).
When the six letters of בְּרֵאשִׁית (In the beginning) are fully expanded:
בית ריש אלף שין יוד תאו
the total gematria is 1,820.
Thus:
The expansion of “Bereshit” = 1,820 = the firstfruit.
Since 1,820 has already been shown to represent
the sparks of the nations who come to God,
this reveals:
The believers among the nations are the expanded firstfruit
already hidden within Israel from the beginning of creation.
The gematria of בְּרֵאשִׁית itself is 913.
Its expansion is 1,820.
Thus the “pregnancy number” is:
1,820 − 913 = 907
907: The Expansion of Yechidah
907 is the gematria of the expanded form (יוד חית יוד דלת הי) of יְחִידָה (Yechidah),
the highest level of the soul —
the level of absolute unity with God.
In Kabbalah, Yechidah is the soul‑level of the Messiah.
Thus:
907 = the soul‑level of the Messiah, Yeshua.
This means:
Within the 1,820 sparks (the firstfruit),
the Messianic soul‑spark (907) is hidden.
907: The Two Greatest Commandments
Even more astonishing:
907 is the gematria of the two greatest commandments:
- Love God
וְאָהַבְתָּ אֵת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ
(“You shall love YHWH your God” — Deut. 6:5) - Love your neighbor
וְאָהַבְתָּ לְרֵעֲךָ כָּמוֹךָ: אֲנִי יְהוָה
(“You shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am YHWH” — Lev. 19:18)
Both verses have a gematria of 907.
Thus:
The core of the Torah — love of God and love of neighbor —
is encoded in the number 907.
“Love Your Neighbor” = 1,820
If we examine the phrase וְאָהַבְתָּ לְרֵעֲךָ כָּמוֹךָ
(“Love your neighbor as yourself”)
and count the final letters ךָ with their large values (500 + 500),
the total gematria becomes 1,820.
Thus:
1,820 = “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
And therefore:
- 1,820 = firstfruit – In the beginning
- 1,820 = the sparks of the nations
- 1,820 = the expansion of Bereshit
- 1,820 = the structure of the New Testament
- 1,820 = “love your neighbor as yourself”
All structures converge perfectly.
